A Short History of The New Cavendish Club

The Voluntary Aid Detachment was founded in 1909 to supplement the Territorial Army's medical services. In 1915 they were put to the test when the War Office decided that VAD nurses should be contracted to military hospitals. As well as nursing, VAD members provided welfare services to the sick and wounded, and often served on the front lines. Over 70,000 VADs were at work when armistice was declared. They travelled the world, and were to continue their invaluable work into the second World War and after.
At the end of World War I Lady Ampthill, who had been Chairman of the Joint Women's VAD Department of the Order of St John and the British Red Cross Society, felt there should be "a first class Ladies' Club" in London for all VADs part and present. Charges must be moderate because many potential members were on restricted incomes.
An appeal for funds was launched and many who were grateful for the outstanding service of VADs during the war contributed large sums. The project received wide press coverage, and a notice was also sent to all Red Cross and St John County headquarters offering £2 shares in the company. This resulted in about 1,400 shareholders with 1 share each!
The Club's first home was at Queen Anne House, number 28 Cavendish Square - Marshall Thomson's Hotel, mentioned in Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair'. The sum of £25,000 secure a 999 year lease, furniture and fittings, along with Herbert, the hotel's pantry boy who later became the Club's Head Porter.
'The Spectator' reported "The work of decorating and fitting the Club has been carried on extremely quickly, partly owing to the fact that many of the workmen engaged on it have during the war been in military and auxiliary hospitals where the VADs were serving. They therefore feel and express a real personal interest in the progress of the work and in the building being ready in time."
Finally, on June 14, 19020 Lady Ampthill, Chairman of the Board of Directors, declared the Club open and gave a lunch party for over 100 guests to celebrate. The Club had the double honour of having Queen Mary as its patron and Princess Mary (later the Princess Royal), commandant of a VA Detachment, as an honorary member.
Response to the Club from VADs was enthusiastic and well before it opened 2,500 membership applications had flooded in. The Country subscription was one guinea (£1.05), and Town was double. A single room cost six shillings and sixpence a night (32p). Luncheon was from one shilling and threepence (7p) and the six course Club dinner four shillings and sixpence (26p).
The dining room was staffed by ex VADs who wanted to be in London but whose parents wished them to be in a respectable establishment under supervision. They wore VAD uniform with caps and aprons, slept three to a bedroom in a neighbouring house, and had one weekend off a month. They were paid two pounds and ten shillings a month.
Alfred was the head porter, Albert the luggage porter and Herbert the pantry boy before becoming night porter. There was also a page boy.
The Club went from strength to strength until the outbreak of World War II when all the men left to join the forces, and a small female staff remained. The Club, like so many London buildings, was damaged by a fire bomb. One memorable night members had to leave their warm beds and seek shelter in a nearby hotel. The Club then remained closed for six weeks.
Mrs How, the Company and Club secretary, coped gallantly throughout the war and finally retired aged 80 at the end of 1945. Her secretary, Miss Camp, was renowned for having the most prodigious memory. She could recall any members who had not paid their subscriptions, and if they dared appear in the Club they would be tracked down - even in the cloakroom. They always paid up!
Miss Muriel Sample came to the Club as Secretary in 1946. An ex VAD, she had served during the war in North Africa and Italy. She recalls, "Immediately after the war the difficulties of running a Club were immense. Staff shortages were appalling and food was rationed and very hard to get. We seemed to live on endless pigeons.
"Hilda, the cook, and I did not get on very well. She had a violent temper and was once found chasing John, her assistant, up the kitchen stairs with a carving knife. When Hilda left she was replaced by an ex army chef who was a great success, remaining with us for 20 years."
Miss Sample decided that life in the Club during these lean years would be more cheerful if there were a bar. So she covered trestle table with a white cloth and a few precious bottles, and set up for business in the former air raid shelter. "I then went round all the members who were in the Club that day telling them of the great event. The very first person I told was an elderly member who was not at all amused - it turned out she was a teetotaller."
The Club had many distinguished members. The Princess Royal as an honorary member used to lunch regularly at the Club, particularly during the war years when her staff at St James's Palace was "of skeleton dimensions". She said the food was a great improvement on what she was served at home. She used to bring her sons with her when they were young and had to be taken to the dentist or doctor on Harley Street.
The Princess insisted on being treated as an ordinary member with no fuss - unlike an almost unknown Spanish Princess, brought to the Club by Lady Ampthill. Everyone in the Dining Room was told to stand when she entered or left the room.
Interesting members have included Lady Tweedsmuir, Dame Anna Neagle, and Dame Isobel Baillie. Some members have been less illustrious. One was jailed during the war for being a friend of Hitler's and another stole a fur coat from the cloakroom. The theft was only discovered because Herbert noticed she left the Club wearing one fur coat and carrying another. The culprit was apprehended in Wigmore Hall.
Lady Ampthill remained Chairman until 1957, when illness forced here to resign. Muriel Sample recalls, "She had been the inspiration of the Club and its guiding light throughout its life and we were all terribly sad when she decided it was time for her to go." Her place was taken by Viscountess Broome.
In 1957 many building changes were going on in Cavendish Square, John Lewis was extending its premises and an underground car park was being built under the Square gardens. The Club's corner site had over the years attracted the attention of numerous businesses wishing to buy its lease. All overtures had been turned down, but in 1957 an offer came which was too good to refuse. A shareholders' meeting was called, and a vote taken to accept the offer.
Finding new centrally located premises was less easy. Finally, after weeks of searching, three elegant early 19th century houses in Great Cumberland Place were found (the corner house being acquired soon after). They had suffered badly in the war and had to be practically rebuilt, so although the Club premises were vacated in September 1958 the new ones were not ready until May the following year. Hospitality was arranged for members at other clubs and many of the staff took temporary jobs.
The office staff remained, camped out in two rooms in the new house. Miss Sample remembers those days vividly, "We had to pick our way very carefully through all sorts of building hazards to reach our temporary office, and we had to go down the road to the Cumberland Hotel to the lavatory! I slept alone in the house in a room with a large tarpaulin which flapped rather eerily in the night and was very draughty."
A new kitchen had to be built and equipped, and the dining room (now the Jubilee Room) was formed from a roofless open space which had been the basement area of three of the houses. One room on the corner house had a particularly fine ceiling, and a skilled plasterer spent many days restoring the intricate design. Miss Sample recalls, "Alas. During the first week of the opening we were coming up from dinner one evening when there was a terrific thud and clouds of white dust. We found the whole ceiling had collapsed..."
The Princess Royal was invited to perform the opening ceremony for the new Club which took place in December 1959. After touring the building she told members "I do not think there is a ladies' club in London at the present time which is able to offer a more attractive club house and more agreeable amenities to its members."
Since then the Club has seen many changes and further improvements. Membership was extended to ex members of the Cowdray Club and the Guide Club and later to women of the Magistrates Association and WVS. Then "gentlemen members as well as business ladies" were admitted. In recognition of the widened membership, the Club's name was altered to the New Cavendish.
A major face lift was carried out too. Bedrooms were modernised, and most now have telephones and en suite bathrooms. The trestle table went long ago, and the bar and coffee lounge are now a comfortable meeting place for members and guests, and the elegant dining room is open for lunch and dinner.
There is a roof garden and a library, and private rooms are available for hire. Membership stands at nearly 2,000. Many businessmen and women have joined. They come in for lunch or to change after the office and relax in the bar before going out in the evening. They also take advantage of the reasonably priced overnight accommodation.
The face of Lady Ampthill's club has certainly changed, but the New Cavendish still remains a safe and comfortable haven in the heart of London. And happily there are still many ex VAD members to keep the original spirit of the VAD Ladies' Club alive.

Ladies Market HONG KONG

Ladies Market History

In the old days, it was not easy to get a job. Many people ended up being hawkers on the street to earn a living. Due to the various problems caused by illegal hawkers, the Hong Kong government decided to define "authorized hawkering zone" in 1975. Twenty zones were allocated in Kowloon and the the section of Tung Choi Street between Argyle Street and Shan Tung Street is the first zone they defined.
At the beginning, most hawkers sell ladies clothes and accessories there so it get the name "Ladies Street" or "Ladies Market". As the market gets more famous and busier, the government has extended it to Dundas Street. In Aug 2000, the Ladies Street had a test run of "Pedestrian Only Zone". 4p.m. to 11p.m. from Monday to Saturday and noon till 11p.m. on public holiday is for pedestrian only. In Dec the same year, the plan was confirm.
Nowadays, Ladies Market is not just famous around the locals, many tourists visit there for cheap shopping and souvenir too.

Women Shaving Their Pubic Hair

Women shaving their pubic hair is different than using the razor on legs or underarms. You need a bit more patience and care because of this sensitive zone and thicker hair type. While you might be able to get away with a 'hurry up and get it done job' with other areas, but not this one. Here we will show you how to get a close, safe shave while avoiding common problems like nicks and ingrown hairs. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 1/2 hour for women shaving their pubic hair Here's How: Choose your shaving cream wisely. For this sensitive body zone be sure to get and use a good shaving cream or gel, using soap is definitely out. The Art of Shaving, Unscented Shaving Cream (compare prices) is phenomenal for getting a smooth shave, moisturizing skin and preventing ingrown hairs. Don’t skimp on your razor. Stay clear of the straight, cheap disposables or you'll be asking for cuts and nicks. Instead use a razor with a pivoting head and multiple blades to give you a smooth, close shave. My pick Schick Quattro for women (compare prices). Give a haircut. Trim hair down first as short as possible by placing comb flat on the skin and trim over comb with scissors, or with clippers using the shortest guard. The less hair you start out with means less use of your razor. Take a warm shower or bath. At least 5-10 minutes of the heat will soften skin and relax the hair follicle. Exfoliate. Rid dead skin cells and provide a closer shave by using a mild exfoliator or your favorite body wash with an Ayate washcloth (compare prices) on your pubic area. Dab on some shaving oil. Working as a barrier on your skin, the razor will glide easier instead of dragging and moisturize skin. It also helps prevent razor burn, general irritation and ingrown hairs. Apply shaving cream or gel. Make sure skin is damp but not overly wet. If you have a shaving brush, work the product with the brush in circles to help lift hair and get a closer shave. Shave. Using a fresh blade, first go in the same direction of hair growth and then in opposite direction. Don't go over the same area too many times. Rinse. In between strokes, be sure to rinse blade. A clogged razor won’t work well. Cleanse. Rinse pubic area and pat dry with towel. Moisturize. Apply a light, preferably unscented lotion. Fight redness. There's a tendency for getting ingrown hairs. Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum (read review) can help with bumps, redness and ingrown hairs. Tips: Keep all products on the outside of your body only. And avoid shaving during your period, as skin is more sensitive. If you are taking off most of your hair, a vaginal shield, the Va j-j Visor will offer you protection so you don't cut your inner vulva. Using a small mirror will also help you see better. Shaving while taking a shower, rather than a bath can make things easier because you can prop up legs on side of stall. If you're daring, you can create pubic hair designs at home. Shaving only takes hair even with the skin, waxing will keep hair away weeks at a time. You may want to consider a Brazilian wax. Private questions for ladies about sex & orgasms.

Questions: 1. ladies, have you ever experienced clitoral & g-spot orgasms?
2. Have you tried anal sex? If yes, have you ever experienced anal orgasm? If no, are you interested in trying out anal sex?

...there's such a thing as anal orgasm? o.o

1. never had an orgasm with my husband. the sex is heavenly, i just don't orgasm, don't know why =/

2. would never attempt anal sex. save for the times hubby misses LOL
it's a religion thing, anal sex is strictly forbidden, i'm assuming because of the health risks.

I think I orgasm clitoral. When I want to come, I just rub my clit against my husband's cok, and a few seconds later I am in orgasm heaven.

Don't know about the g-spot. I just know when I come, my vagina twitches and twitches, the twitches can continue for quite a long time.

We have tried anal once, didn't enjoy it much, my whole body was numb, the feeling was strange, it was painful but also enjoyable. Don't know if I want to try it again. If we want to try kinky stuff, I need a few good days to rest. When my husband's cok was in my ass, I needed something in my pu$$$ too, maybe that's why people do double penetration.

All orgasms are clitoral in origin.

GP those twitches are great aren't they? I love them
 Yes, they are!

Sex and orgasms are just wonderful! My husband and I always talk to each other, how come us human are so LUCKY, we get to orgasm often!!!

As for me, I did experience lots of g-spot orgasms during penetration. Clitoral orgasms can be achieved by oral sex or by rubbing it by myself.
G-spot orgasms come like a wave and I can have quite many per round. I can also achieve it by myself at woman on top position. My husband also knows how to stimulate my g-spot by fingering.
Some women can actually squirt by having g-spot orgasms.
2. I had anal sex experiences and if the man knows how to do it correctly, so you give him 5 mins, he gives you heaven.
A good anal sex can bring women the greatest, longest, and biggest enjoyment that you never experience in life, I would say, it's a shame if you never experience it. You will reach a state that you don't want your man to stop and you would beg for more.
It was sooo good but the man must know how. He shouldn't make you hurt. Hurting and pain are wrong.
Sorry i am not a lady but, thought my point would ad value

I believe my wife climaxes entirely differently from strickly clitoral vs from penetration I will have to explore further abou t g spot.

Wife seems uninterested in anal and i have not pushed the issue. I have dated more than one women who absolutely loved Anal. Like what others have described it sent them to heaven. I have read that the anus is fulled with nerve endings. I have heard anal stimulation of a man can be quite pleasurable too but (excuse the pun) I cannot get past the notion that it is somehow something only gay men should/can enjoy. I guess that makes me rather closed minded or ignorant.

The male prostate is located just in, and just back a lil, once inside the anus(it feels like a lil bump) and all men can enjoy the pleasure of having it massaged.

The difference for women is that the female equivalent of the male prostate is located in her clitoral area but the clitoral tissues with all their nerve endings reach the vagina and the anus.

Anal sex grossed me out the first time when I was asked to do it, but my bf at that time was quite good at comforting me, and he's well experiended, so it wasn't painful at all.
After some tries, I was able to enjoy anal sex. It's great.
My husband instead has no experience in anal sex, so I don't really know how to guide him also because his cok is much bigger than my bf in the past.
Oops, did I just say my past bf has a small penis that's why not much pain for anal sex? LOL

Private Ladies Pool

As progressive Kuwait is, we respect the culture and traditions of this country. Women do tend to enjoy swimming and deserve to have as much fun as their families do. And thus we came about with the idea of having a covered ladies pool where, women can enjoy in absolute privacy. It's an idea which has been well appreciated and we are glad being able to cater for this segment of society.

Private Clubs: Hideouts of the Rich and Shameless

When the Rainbow Room, the glitzy restaurant atop Rockefeller Center, shuttered a week ago and blamed slowing business and the economy, it might have given the impression that the city's elite are scaling back on luxury spending. After all, sales at Saks dropped by 19 percent last month. So where, oh where have all the rich people gone? As it turns out, private membership spots like the Core Club, Soho House and Norwood are experiencing a revival in these lean economic times—because New York's movers and shakers are not so much cutting back as moving their party indoors.
"Consciously or unconsciously, people don't want to look flashy in this environment," says socialite Euan Rellie, one of the founding members of Soho House, a members-only club in the Meatpacking District. "People want to look grounded." But New Yorkers who haven't lost their expensive tastes are discovering that they can cultivate the "grounded" look and still enjoy $350-a-pop bottle service within their private clubhouses, where anyone who sees them is equally guilty of spending when spending is no longer cool.
In fact, the Soho House membership waiting list has ballooned to 3,000 people (there are currently about 5,000 members). At the Core Club, the private members-only lodge that exists behind an unmarked door on East 55th Street and Madison Avenue, suddenly "you can't get a seat in the dining room at lunch," says Jennie Saunders, who founded the club in 2005 when Wall Street was flush with cash and the real estate market was booming. The club, which costs $50,000 to join and then $15,000 annually, has maintained its 90 percent retention rate (one recent dropout, however, is Bernie Madoff's son Mark although a spokesman for the club declined to say how the relationship was terminated). Members include business moguls Harvey Weinstein, William Lauder and Ron Burkle, as well as Bill Clinton and fashion designer Tory Burch, according to a membership list obtained by Page Six Magazine.

CORE CLUB: The lodge's event spaces, hairstylists and spa services are booked solid.
The Core Club is based on an Atlas Shrugged-like worldview, where the leading creative and industrialist minds retreat away from the public at large to form their own economy. New Yorkers must be recommended by existing members to join this nexus of power players from the worlds of finance, real estate, film, fashion and politics. If the conversation turned to architecture, wouldn't it be helpful if starchitect Richard Meier could chime in? Why argue about the Manhattan real estate market if Vornado chairman Steven Roth isn't there to tell you the latest? Why bother with a nice lunch if celebrity chef Tom Colicchio isn't cooking it for you? (Meier and Roth are members, while Colicchio designs the menu.) The founding idea is that any discussion, as well as any services you need—a personal shopper, a nanny, tickets to St. Barts—can be had through the club. Shopping, working out and socializing could all take place next to other dealmakers. Instead of navigating through the throngs of tourists at MoMA, modern art at the Core Club is rotated every month and comes from the private collections of its members. Just before Christmas, a Keith Haring print hung in the women's changing room and a Kenny Scharf mural dominated the restaurant. The club, which currently has close to 600 members, offers the rich a private place to behave rich without feeling guilty.
It should be noted that the 100-plus founding members of the Core Club—including venture capitalist Vivi Nevo, Blackstone Group chairman Stephen Schwarzman and developer Aby Rosen and his wife, Samantha Boardman—each invested $100,000 and were supposed to be paid back in full, with interest, after five years, in 2010. Today, there's concern that their money is gone for good. Founder Jennie Saunders tells Page Six Magazine that the club is "converting the founding membership to a lifetime membership with a collection of valuable soft assets" such as spa services and using the facilities for personal events, to pay the founders back.
The Core Club's membership model has all the over-the-top lavishness of a bygone Sex and the City era—the annual dues only give you access to pay jacked-up prices on everything else. After all, lunch entrées like the club's pan-roasted Loup de mer (sea bass) cost $38. But today, many members say the thrill of belonging to a hermetically sealed bunker in Midtown is more appealing than ever.

"Every time I walk into the club for lunch, I say, 'No recession here,' " says Fred Davis, one of the founding members of the Core Club and a senior partner at the law firm Davis, Shapiro, Lewit & Hayes. Fred, who works with clients such as Kanye West and Linkin Park, says these days he's using the club four times a week, and even hosted the reception for his 140-person wedding at the club last October. Another member, lawyer Adam Gottbetter, says, "I wanted to host a corporate event at the Core Club in December, but they had zero availability for me throughout the month. You hear about everyone canceling their Christmas parties, but no matter what date I chose, the club was booked." On a Tuesday afternoon in early December, the five treatment rooms were all in use, and the hairstylist was booked through the New Year. In comparison, the Frédéric Fekkai salon on Fifth Avenue had availability every day of the week.
Meanwhile at Soho House, "We've had 95 percent of our members renew their memberships," says director of operations Mark Somen. "They like the exclusivity without the pretentiousness." (A 900-square-foot hotel suite that used to rent for $1,500 a night, however, is now available for $900 a night.)
The downtown location has hired a new chef, Neil Ferguson, a disciple of Gordon Ramsay's, to roll out two new menus at the club, and is building a cheese bar in the 96-seat dining room. The club is also bringing in a life coach to host an interactive talk about "kicking ass in 2009" and is chairing a series of interactive book readings, to create a greater sense of community among members. "In a turbulent economic environment, there's an appeal to be looked after and treated like you're important. Refuge and comfort and membership among like-minded people is very appealing right now," says Euan.
Norwood, the newest members-only collective to the Manhattan scene, opened in 2007 in a townhouse on West 14th Street. The club has managed to stay relatively under the radar—presumably, given management's refusal to speak to the press or to post any information about membership on its Web site, just where it wants to be. According to members, there is a joining fee of about $1,000, plus annual dues of $750. But selection is more about who you are than how much money you make. "It's limited to creative types" who are recommended from the inside, says one member. "People want to spend time in places where they feel a sense of connection and community," says a fashion publicist who spends many Friday nights at Norwood, alongside actor Danny Masterson and model–party girl Bijou Phillips. "The upstairs is always packed these days."
The wealthy and privileged might be content to hibernate for the winter—eating, drinking and enjoying Swedish massages sealed up in their fabulous bunkers far from the bargain-hunting, recession-plagued masses. The question is, will this species rouse and emerge in time for Fashion Week, or will they stay cozy until polo season?

Members Only Section
We offer a members only section that provides a calendar of events, newsletter, photo gallery, and a list of officers and committees.

Mission of the Saint Louis Woman's Club

For educational purposes, and especially to promote literature, science and art and the study thereof, and general intellectual culture, to provide a place for the encouragement of social intercourse and for the convenience of its members: to establish, maintain and manage a club for mutual improvement.

History of the Saint Louis Woman's Club

The Louisiana Exposition of 1904, often called The Saint Louis World’s Fair of 1904 inspired the creation of The Saint Louis Woman’s Club in 1903. The exposition’s Directors wanted a venue that would provide the wives of the heads of state and royalty from all over the world with gracious hospitality while in Saint Louis.

The Directors asked six ladies to form a committee solely for this purpose: Mrs. James L. Blair, Mrs. David R. Francis, Mrs. William Hardaway, Mrs. Thomas K. Niedringhaus, Mrs. Ashley Scott and Mrs. Julius Walsh. Meeting in April 1903, this group subsequently invited 100 other ladies to join with them.

Mrs. Blair became the first President of the newly formed Saint Louis Woman’s Club, while also serving as president of the Fair’s Board of Lady Managers. Mrs. Blair combined her interest as president of the Morning Music Choral, a group needing rooms for performance, to include a performance hall and ballroom in the plan for The Club.

The home of Augustus Frederick Shapleigh at 3611 Washington next to the very fashionable Vandeventer Place in what is now Grand Center, became the first Club House.
In 1912, The Saint Louis Woman’s Club moved to its present location, 4600 Lindell Boulevard built by William R. Donaldson in 1895. In 1929, they added a new dining room, ballroom, grand staircase, elevator and kitchen.

In the current membership, personal growth and friendship are the twin goals of all activities which include literature study, cooking sessions with the Chef; trimming the house and tree at Christmas; enjoying fine cuisine, exploring art on local excursions and enjoying friends at private parties or Club dinner dances. There are card clubs and book clubs as well as many committees who diligently plan programs, create floral arrangements, organize fashion shows and parties and work on the design and health of this lovely home.

Now in our second century, The Club serves women well as a classroom, dining room, meeting place, theater, ballroom and center of family and social activity. Meanwhile, a tour of our beautiful club reveals the love, generosity, integrity, wisdom, and vision of past generations, as well as the true “Spirit of Saint Louis.”

Buxton Spa Conference

This inaugural meeting proved to be one of the most uplifting and exciting forums I’ve attended in recent years.
The 2 day conference in late June hosted by the University of Derby (the only UK university to offer both a 4 year BS and MS degrees in spa)was held in the ‘revitalizing’ and lovely spa town of Buxton in Derbyshire.
University  faculty and students were joined by prominent industry mentors such as Marion Schneider of ToskanaoWorld (Germany)and colleagues from the traditional medical spa in Europe and  (who have long used the healing power of mineral waters and thermal conduction  to reduce common inflammatory conditions ) and others  from the more familiar luxury, beauty and relaxation spa model prevalent  in the US and UK.
The forum constituted a co-joining of the two areas of the industry that I have long been promoting – health and beauty or, as I often describe it:  ‘ Beauty as a reflection of Wellness”
The  meeting was largely focused on the potential of spa education to shape the future of our industry, sustainability and the need to ascertain and document the efficacy of spa treatments.
Among  the speakers were Andrew Gibson of the Mandarin Oriental Group and Mike Wallace of the Budapest based Danubius Health Spa  which recently purchased The Buxton Crescent.  The Danubius group  intends  to restore the magnificent old spa hotel to its  former glory by and developing a  luxurious spa featuring  traditional Medical Spa elements..
One of my favorite talks came from a Japanese university professor who   presented on Balneotherapy.  His presentation detailed  the gravitational undercurrents  at work in the Pacific Ocean and pointed to the corresponding presence  of Japan’s wealth of  mineral hot springs (On Som).   Volatile waters equal volatile land, he explained.
The On Som  is a popular practice in Japan.  The Japanese believe regular immersion in the On Som helps  relax and restore the body from the stresses of everyday life.
Balneotherapy  is an aspect of Spa that has been largely forgotten here in the US. Once a thriving industry the celebrated spa mineral water towns of   Palm Springs, Saratoga, Hot Springs and dozens of others are today greatly diminished as is the scientific basis and the application of Balneo therapies.
Perhaps it is time for us, as an industry, to revisit the rejuvenating and soulful wonders of healing mineral waters.
Water is the source of spa. It is a powerful therapeutic agent and it constitutes one of the more pressing concerns facing our ‘global’ industry. Our ability to gain access to mineral waters/ healthy waters  in order to provide a healing retreat may soon emerge as one of our industry’s most daunting challenges.
If spa’s therapeutic  goal is to restore the body to homeostasis, access to healthy water is essential..
Environmentalists from around the world  tell us that in the not too distant future  water will become one  of our most valuable (and expensive ) commodities .  I wonder:  Is it because our water sources are drying up? Being contaminated? Or is it because our water supplies our being bought up?
Buxton has a Spa water source – locals swear by it, declaring that it makes the best cup of tea….ever.  Located across from The Crescent and at the edge of the town’s park,  locals bring their empty containers and fill them from St Anne’s well..
The water flows and it’s free.
Buxton water was recently purchased by a private company and is now available worldwide.  Travel 30 miles out of Buxton and an 8oz bottle will cost you a $1.25.
So what was so exciting, so encouraging, about the Buxton meeting?  Many things: To share and experience  the enthusiasm and determination of others who aspire to spa’s healing potential., to gather around the well as a group  with a  declared intention of a realizing a  future of flowing, healing waters, and to  walk with others  as we rediscover our path home.

Private Ladies

Private ladies' night photography parties produce glamour shots
When Bob Gassen started HumaNature Photography 10 years ago, he never imagined he'd be hosting private photography sessions for groups of up to seven scantily-dressed women at a time. But for the past year, that's just what he and his female staff have been doing after hours in his Kirkland, Wash.-studio.
They call them "All Wrapped Up" parties, but they're more like ladies night wine and hors d'oeuvres gatherings — with lingerie, Gassen says. And they've become increasingly popular for Valentine's Day.
"They (participants) get tastefully staged boudoir-style photos that accentuate their most positive features and make them feel glamorous," Gassen says. "We've done about a dozen of them for single women and up to five or six of their friends, and even for couples. We do them after hours, and close the doors to the studio so we can protect their privacy and work uninterrupted."
Gassen turned his photography hobby into a business after the high-tech implosion left him without technology-related work, and found the transition into all-digital photography comfortable.
"When I first started, I wanted to travel and take nature and landscape photography," Gassen says. "But I quickly realized there weren't too many openings at National Geographic."
His first paid job was taking portraits of some 400 member families at a local country club — a job he says would have been impossible to do if he had to use paper contact sheets and wait weeks for families to make their selections and place their orders. "Today, we book an hour for a shoot, and show customers 10 - 15 shots on a laptop computer right after we take them, so we can do them over if they don't like them, or take their orders right away."
Ladies night at HumaNature's studio comes after the more traditional work photographing families, shooting corporate head shots, and covering graduations and special events. They've been so successful, Gassen says he's decided to extend his Valentine's Day promotion through March 7 — the end of the Northwest Women's Show at Qwest Field Event Center in Seattle.
He charges $95 for one "All Wrapped Up" sitting, or a promotional price of $150 per sitting for two or more subjects. Professionally retouched prints cost an additional $35 for each 4x6-inch size up to $70 each for 8x10s. HumaNature also can produce larger, custom prints, slide shows, calendars, albums and other photographic specialty items.
"It's wonderful to see the friendships among the women, and how supportive they are of each other," Gassen adds. "We can produce some really 'WOW' images through the magic of photography and retouching. It's a lot of fun."
